MADISON, ILL. - People are rallying Thursday night around the laid off workers from the U.S. Steel Plant in Granite City.
Community organizers are holding a rally at the raceway event at Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, Illinois.
It runs from 5 to 8 p.m. and is open to the public with $20 admission.
Proceeds will be made available to unemployed workers through the United Way and labor leaders.
U.S. Steel ideled its Granite City facility in late 2015.
Currently more than 1,600 steelworkers remain without work.
Union leaders say many have lost their unemployment and healthcare benefits. Others have lost their homes.
