Man killed in officer-involved shooting ID'd

Breaking news of an officer-involved shooting in North St. Louis.

One man was shot and killed by an officer Friday night  in the Baden neighborhood of north St. Louis.

The shooting happened at around 7:35 p.m.

Police Chief Sam Dotson said officers in a marked police car attempted attempted to pull over 38-year-old Michael Thompson Jr., who they say was driving erratically in a car with out-of-state plates on the 800 block of Gimblin Street. Thompson drove about two blocks before coming to a stop in the middle of the road. Dotson said he then got out of the car and ran.

He ran about one block and fired a shot at the officer before his gun jammed. The officer fired multiple shots, striking and killing Thompson, who was pronounced dead on the scene.

Dotson said Thompson was wanted for parole violations and was a convicted felon and has several other felony warrants.

Dotson said the police car has a dash camera, which captured the man running, but did not show the shooting.

Two other people were in the car, and they were taken into custody by another officer in the police car. Dotson said they are interviewing the other people who were in the car.
