Metro releases statement about UMSL student's death

ST. LOUIS COUNTY – Metro has responded after a student at the University of Missouri-St. Louis was struck and killed Monday by a MetroLink train at the UMSL North station.

Here is the statement released by Metro spokesperson Patti Beck:

This was a tragic accident. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family of our passenger who was tragically struck by a MetroLink train at the UMSL North MetroLink Station yesterday.

The accident is under investigation. When we receive all the information from our investigation and information from the St. Louis County Police Department which handled the accident scene, we will review our procedures to see if any changes should be made.

We record 47 million boardings a year and it is rare that something this tragic happens. We have been recognized as one of the top transit agencies in the nation by the Transportation Security Administration with its Gold Standard Rating for demonstrating the highest level of excellence for our commitment to security and passenger safety. We do everything we can to keep our customers safe, but we cannot emphasize enough—do not run in front of a moving train or bus.

We ask our transit customers to be alert, aware and always look both ways when crossing the tracks. Don't be distracted with your phone or music in your headphones.

Accidents like this one are rare on our MetroLink system. The only other time a passenger has been struck by a MetroLink train at this station was an attempted suicide in 2006. Those are the only two accidents at the UMSL North MetroLink Station in 20 and a half years.

Veronica Muo, 27, was killed Monday after she was hit by a train around 5 p.m. Authorities say she was at a pedestrian crossing when she slipped and fell. She was hit by the train and became wedged underneath.

The crossing is not gated and does not have signals.

There's no word on what caused Muo to slip.
