MoDOT addresses 'illegal campaigning' claims

ST. CHARLES, Mo. - After receiving an email purporting to show a Missouri Department of Transportation road sign advocating for the passage of an upcoming ballot initiative, NewsChannel 5 sought to separate fact from fiction.

The email, sent by a St. Charles-area attorney, says the electronic road sign, which reads "Fix Our Roads & Bridges," is advocating for Amendment 7, a sales tax increase of three-quarters of one percent to fund local highway, road, bridge, and transportation projects for the next 10 years.

NewsChannel 5's Stephanie Diffin contacted MoDOT Tuesday morning and asked for a comment. That afternoon, MoDOT spokesman Andrew Gates responded.

"These are not ours," Gates said, "and I am told many of them have a 'paid for' disclaimer. These signs are not allowed on our right of way."
