Neighbors try to save man from burning home

Authorities have identified the victim as John Raaf.

FERGUSON, Mo. - A house fire has left one person dead. It happened overnight on Anabel Ave. Some neighbors were involved in a dramatic attempt to save the victim's life.

Emily Fletcher saw flames and smoke coming from the home at around 2 a.m.

"I heard what sounded like glass break," she said.

She called 911. Then, she and her husband, Anthony Fletcher, ran across the street.

"I'm like, 'Sir, sir, sir, sir, open the door, open the door,'" Anthony said. "I'm hitting the windows. I ran to the side of the house. It, just, couldn't get him."

A few minutes later, emergency crews arrived.

"When emergency crews came I did step away," Anthony said.

That's when Anthony went live on Facebook, showing the fire scene from his phone.

"It would have been awesome to see them actually get in there and save his life and know that we actually you know did something to help somebody out," he said.

"It kind of hurts because I really thought that I could save him and now I find out that I couldn't," Emily added.

The victim has been identified as 68-year-old John Raaf.

There is no word on how the fire got started. St. Louis County Police say the arson and explosive units are assisting with the investigation.
