Officer-involved shooting in south St. Louis city

The suspect was in critical condition.

One man is in critical condition, shot by a St. Louis police officer whom the department says was defending himself.

Police said the suspect was driving a red Chevy Blaze, the same SUV that fled from police twice in one week.

The officers spotted the vehicle in a Hardee's parking lot on South Broadway around 12:30 Saturday afternoon.

Police said when officers approached the vehicle, the suspect drove directly at one of the officers who opened fire with several shots striking the suspect.

The officer who fired shots has been with the police department for three and a half years.

The interim police chief says he will be placed on leave and the Force Investigative Unit is reviewing the case.
