Picking your own peaches is a favorite among St. Louis metro area residents, but this season might not see much picking at all.
Several farms' peach crops are small or nonexistent due to the brutal winter weather conditions.
Eckert's Orchard in Belleville has lost 40-60 percent of its crops, Chris Eckert, company president said.
Eckert's will not have pick your own peaches this year, but they will have peaches available for purchase in their stores.
Other farmers are reporting similar situations including Simonton Orchards, Schwartz Orchard and other locations in Illinois, according to the Belleville News-Democrat.
The harsh winter has not only affected the St. Louis area as peach crops as far as the South have also turned out to be fewer than normal.
This past winter saw eight winter storms as well as one of the coldest on record in Missouri and Illinois, according to Lambert St. Louis-International Airport. The average temperature was 4.8 degrees below nomral.
