Railroad crossing fire halts train traffic

ST. LOUIS COUNTY - A fire at the Sappington Road rail crossing halted train traffic Thursday morning.

The fire was first reported around 6 a.m.

A spokesman for the Union Pacific Railroad said a heating component for the switching device that prevents the switchers on the tracks from freezing caught fire. Leaves and weeds ignited when the heater kicked on and caught fire.

The device appears to be functioning properly and operations have returned to normal.
