HAZELWOOD, MO. - There is an opportunity to help a Hazelwood police officer who was seriously injured in a car accident in August. Dozens of restaurants are donating some of their proceeds on Thursday in support of his recovery.
April Briscuso from the Hazelwood Police Department organized the Tables for Tudor event with almost 80 restaurants getting on board.
Tony's Donuts is one of the restaurants participating. Ten percent of all sales made there on Thursday will support officer Craig Tudor's recovery.
"We want to show our support any way possible, especially with the Hazelwood Police Department the way they've helped us out over the years,” restaurant co-owner and manager Tony Badra said.
Badra says Tony's Donuts usually gets quite busy in the mornings and it was especially busy Thursday morning with new customers coming out to support the cause.
"It has been a great turnout so far,” he said. “More than I expected."
Tony's is also raising more money than expected.
"I had a customer who came in and she gave a $5 tip and I didn't know where to put it,” Badra said. “Then another customer gave another couple bucks. So I thought maybe put a jar out."
Within a few hours, the jar was full of donations just as the restaurant was filled with well wishes for the injured police officer.
"Just let him know that we're praying for him, wish him a speedy recovery, and I think it's a good thing that everybody come together right now,” customer Shaun Carter said. “These people put their lives on the line for us and I think it's the least we can do, come out and show some support."
Officer Craig Tudor is currently receiving treatment for his injuries at a hospital in Colorado. He's expected to return home later this month.
Many of the restaurants will be raising money the rest of the night. If you haven't made dinner plans yet, you can find a full list of participating businesses here.
