People in St. Charles County can now text 911 with an emergency.
The county made the announcement Thursday, saying calling 911 is still the best way to get help in an emergency, but designers believe it will be most useful for people with disabilities or for situations like a home invasion, where you may be unable to talk on the phone.
The new program is part of a county-wide system upgrade. Only a few agencies in Missouri have similar programs.
Punishment for abusing the system is the same as if you were making a phone call.
