(KSDK) - For the first time, former neighbors are talking about the family involved in last week's bizarre shooting in northern Illinois that left a mother and three children dead.
Kimberly and Christopher Vaughn met in St. Charles, Mo., and later raised three children in St. Peters, Mo., before moving to Oswego, Ill.
Kimberly Vaughn and her three children were found shot to death Thursday in the family's sport utility vehicle. The SUV was parked on a road near Interstate 55 in rural Will County, Ill.
Christopher Vaughn, 32, was shot in the thigh, but survived.
Police are still trying to figure out who fired the gun that killed his wife, Kimberly, 34, and their children, Blake, 8, Cassandra, 11, and Abigayle, 12.
Robert Leonard, of St. Peters, just learned his former next door neighbors were involved in the deadly shooting.
"It's amazing and too close. It’s a crazy world."
Christopher is a Francis Howell High School graduate with many relatives still in the area. His wife graduated from St. Charles West High School in 1991 and also is from the St. Charles County area.
Before leaving the area, the Vaughns lived in the 200 block of Lazy Hollow Court in St. Peters.
Most neighbors declined to talk, but said they are devastated to learn they knew the family now involved in a murder mystery.
Baue Funeral Home in St. Charles is handling the arrangements for Kimberly Vaughn and her children.
Police continue to talk to Christopher, but stressed he is not a suspect.
