KSDK -- Two North County teens were dead after taking an early morning joyride in north St. Louis County near Blackjack.

The driver of the vehicle, 14-year old Brandon Jenkins, died at the scene. 15-year-old Anthony Dunlap died a few hours later at a local hospital.

Four of the six kids involved in the crash were spending New Year's night at Jenkins' home just before the deadly car ride.

The mother of the driver, Pamela Cannon, said the teens were in her Ford Focus when it crashed around 3 a.m. in the 12000 block of El Camara Drive near Parker Road. Her son, Jenkins and his friend Dunlap were killed. All six of the teens were longtime friends.

Cannon said Jenkins asked for her keys Thursday night so he could get a CD out of her car. Jenkins secretly kept the car key and returned the others.

Police said no one in the car was wearing a seatbelt.

Cannon said she was devastated by the loss of her son and was upset that another child died and that others were injured.

One of the survivors, who agreed to speak to NewsChannel 5 on the condition of anonymity, said the six of them went on the joyride because they were bored.

"We just wanted to live our lives and we was just kids," he said.

The boy's mother, Shelia Murphy, said she hopes other kids will learn from this that joyriding can be tragic and deadly.

At least five of the six teens were students in the Hazelwood School District. Hazelwood officials said there will be additional counselors on hand when students return to school Tuesday.

    Funeral arrangements are pending.

In addition to his mother, Brandon Jenkins is survived by his father and two older brothers who live in Seattle, Washington, his stepfather and a six-year-old brother and a four-year-old sister.
