KSDK -- Sources say a rescued Labradoodle from the St. Louis area is on the short list for presidential consideration. So far the Obama family will only say they've narrowed their choices down to a Labradoodle and a Portuguese Water Dog.

Owners of both types of dog in the St. Louis area recommend them highly. Both are medium-sized and both don't shed, although Portuguese Water Dogs have a reputation for being high-energy.

Which is a better option for the Obama family? They'll decide soon enough. However, both may soon see a spike in popularity. Breeders say it's already begun.

There is a downside to presidential attention: the possibility of over-breeding to meet increased demand. In that case, it will be buyer beware.

Obama was quoted this week as saying that the choice of dog has been "tougher than finding a Commerce Secretary."
