KSDK -- A new plant that could bring more than a thousand jobs to Jefferson County received first round approval Thursday evening.

The Crystal City Planning and Zoning Commission recommended passage of a conditional use permit for a proposed iron smelter.

The plan has had it's share of opponents, but support seems to be growing with the downturn in the economy. The city council will take up the issue Monday before the public weighs in.

Not everyone supports the smelter. Some residents believe the deal to bring the smelter to town was done in secrecy.

City officials have said if the smelter comes to town than it could attract additional industry to Crystal City and provide an economic turnaround for the area.

Those opposed to the project are concerned about everything from pollution to property values. City officials said the proper studies will be done and insist the public will be heard before any final decisions are made.

Even if the go ahead is given, it could take up to four years to get the plant built and running.
