KSDK -- If you're trying to make some extra money by selling your children's used clothing and toys, there's a new twist to the old concept of yard sales and resale shops.
"Just Between Friends" is a Christian-based franchise. Unlike a yard sale or traditional resale shop, the franchise said consignors make 70% on the items they sale.
Consignors tag their items at home, drop them off before the sales event and get a check 2 weeks later.
Michelle Wiginton owns the franchise in Columbia, MO, Rolla/Ft. Wood and St. Charles. She said, "Most traditional resale will give you 30% to 50%. Sometimes it's a bulk. You bring in your items, they'll give you $10 for it. 'Just Between Friends' allows consignors to set the prices."
Wiginton held a 2-day sales event on Friday and Saturday at the Calvary Temple in St. Peters.
Sandra Shasteen, a mother of 3, consigned more than 500 items this time. She said, "The last sale I did, I got an $800 check. This sale as of last night when I checked, I've got $600, that's before today."
As a consignor, Shasteen gets to shop the presale before the doors open to the public. As a volunteer working the cash register, she gets first dips even before the consignors.
The sales event not only benefits families with children, it also benefits a charity. After the sale, the items that are not sold have the option of being donated.
Wiginton said, "The neat thing about donating, because our bar code system is an individual itemized list. They get to print out their unsold donated items and it is an itemized tax deduction."
With this particular sale, the donated items will benefit Our Lady's Inn and The Calvary Temple Community closet.
Each franchise has to hold a minimum of 2 sales events each year. Click here www.jbfsale.com to find the next sales event nearest you or to find out how to consign your children's clothes and toys.
