KSDK -- Letters to President Obama from St. Louis students were delivered to Capitol Hill today, then to the White House.

Local students wrote letters to welcome President Obama in a program called "Mail to the Chief." They were among children from US and beyond who handwrote more than 34,000 letters to the new president.

The letter-writing campaign is part of "Mail to the Chief," launched by educational publisher Handwriting Without Tears to inspire young children to express themselves while gaining an appreciation for civic participation.

Students at Wedgwood Elementary School in Florissant and Monroe Elementary School in St. Charles were among those who took part in the program.
