
KSDK -- The former postmaster of the St. Albans Post Office pleaded guilty to federal charges of embezzlement of funds from that Post Office, United States Attorney Catherine L. Hanaway announced.
According to court documents, from October 2006 until October 2008, as part of her duties, Mary DeWitt allegedly received cash at the St. Albans Post Office for the sale of postage and services. From April 2007 to October 2008, DeWitt is accused of keeping at least $10,000 of money from these sales.
Additionally, between October 2006 and October 2008, DeWitt allegedly used $5000 in U.S. Postal money orders for herself and to pay her bills.
DeWitt, 50, Union, MO, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of misappropriation of postal funds.
DeWitt now faces a maximum penalty of ten years in prison and/or fines up to $250,000, when she is sentenced on June 23, 2009.
