KSDK -- The Missouri Highway Patrol announced Tuesday that alcohol played a role in a crash that killed one person and left two others injured.

Crash investigators said that at 5:50 p.m. Sunday, a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta driven by 23-year-old Ashley Matthews travelled off the south side of Highway 94 near Matson Hill. The vehicle overcorrected and crossed the center line of the road, striking an oncoming Cadillac CTS.

The passenger in the Jetta died. She was identified as 24-year-old Ashley Walker of St. Charles. Matthews is hospitalized in serious condition. The driver of the other car, 54-year-old David Mann of Augusta, also has serious injuries.

The Missouri Highway Patrol's Al Nothum said alcohol is suspected to have played a role in the crash. No word yet on charges.
