KSDK -- A 30-year-old Wentzville man is dead following a close-quarters gunfight with police.
At 8:54 a.m. today, the O'Fallon Police Department got a call from someone at the Rock Creek Elementary School. That person asked that officers check on a woman whose child attends the school. The caller claimed that the woman may be in danger.
About six officers responded to an apartment on Mill Creek Parkway. The officers check the front door and it was locked with no sound of anyone inside. A neighbor noticed what was going on and volunteered to call the woman who lived there.
When the woman arrived, she gave them the keys and asked they search the home. No one was inside.
Two officers were instructed to remain at the residence and all other officers left to patrol the area.
A short time later, Maurice Johnson arrived at the residence and walked inside. Two officers in the the back bedrooms emerged and met him the hallway. The officers reported that Johnson then reached for his waist band produced a handgun. A close order gun battle ensued and the suspect was struck and killed.
The O'Fallon Police Department says both of the officers are experienced and have between seven and eleven years of service. Both officers were placed on administrative leave, which is according to departmental policy.
