Missouri lawmakers support flag protection amendment

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Some Missouri Congress members are again pushing for a constitutional amendment protecting the U.S. flag.

An amendment sponsored by Republican Rep. Jo Ann Emerson and Democratic Rep. Ike Skelton would give Congress the "power to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag."

Skelton is highlighting the proposal to coincide with Sunday's national observance of Flag Day.

Similar proposed constitutional amendments have been debated by nearly every recent session of Congress. Supporters say a constitutional amendment is necessary because the Supreme Court has struck down previous laws seeking to protect the flag.

To take effect, constitutional amendments require approval by a two-thirds majority in the House and Senate and ratification by three-fourths of the states.
