KSDK -- The body of a Germantown, Illinois soldier returned home Thursday. Staff Sgt. Josh Melton was killed in action in Afghanistan last week.

His casket made its way to Germantown in a procession of first responders, Patriot Guard riders, family and friends.

Touring through several towns in Clinton County, hundreds lined the streets to honor the fallen soldier.

"(It is) very touching to see the communities come together in Clinton County like this," said resident Dennis Rittenhouse, who stood along the route. "Josh was a friend to everybody. He loved what he was doing for his country more than anything as well as his family."

Staff Sgt. Melton leaves behind a wife and one year old daughter. His funeral will be Saturday in Germantown.
