KSDK -- Investigators believe they know what caused a fatal fire in downtown St. Louis early this morning.
The fire happened at Plaza Square Apartments, at 15th and Pine Streets. Investigators believe the handicapped 54-year-old victim was overcome by smoke in a small fire that was ignited in the bedroom.
Fire officials said the fire was accidental and they blame careless use of smoking materials for starting it. They believe the victim was either smoking in bed and fell asleep or dropped a hot ember onto the bed, setting it on fire.
Investigators said the victim was unable to move around the apartment without the use of a wheelchair.
The victim's name has not been released.
