Ksdk- Firefighters hope you'll remember to set your clock back at 2 a.m. Sunday, and take the time to check your smoke detector. On Saturday, the Black Jack Fire Department went door-to-door asking people to change out the batteries in their fire alarms.
Firefighters want to prevent situations like the one that happened in North St. Louis County back in August. Three young children were killed. The family had a smoke detector, but the batteries were dead. St. Louis Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson says about 20% of all homes do not have working smoke alarms due to worn or missing batteries.
"The ability for a smoke detector to allow people to get out quickly is impressive. Before we would be on a scene and people would be inside yelling for help. Now they're outside yelling for help. Which is a big improvement," says Chief Jenkerson.
The chief says a working smoke alarm doubles your chances of surviving a house fire.
