KSDK -- The City of St. Peters is asking its residents and those in the greater St. Louis area to recycle their old, non-working holiday lights instead of throwing them out.
City leaders say old light strands add to landfill costs when thrown in the trash and can wrap around sorting equipment and damage them.
St. Peters Mayor Len Pagano says people can bring the lights to St. Peters' Recycle City and put them in a specially marked container at the drop-off center. St. Peters residents also have the option of placing their light strands in a blue recycling bag and leaving it to be picked up with their trash for Thursday or Friday collection. Nothing else should be in the bag except for the light strands.
People turned in more than 7.6 tons of non-working holiday lights last year, Mayor Pagano said. The year before that, people recycled 4.5 tons of light strands.
To get to Recycle City, take I-70 to Mid Rivers Mall Drive, head north and then turn right on Ecology Drive. Recycle City will be located on your left.
