KSDK -- They were rescued four months ago as part of the nation's largest dog fighting sting.
Tuesday, Newschannel 5 got an exclusive look inside the local shelter where dozens of dogs, including pit bulls are recovering.
Numerous state, local and federal agencies are involved in the case that is still ongoing.
Nearly 500 pit bulls have been housed at a secret location after being rescued from the metro east and the St. Louis area.
Debbie Hill and other professionals are able to cuddle once abused pit bulls who now clamor for the attention of people. A converted warehouse is now the temporary home for the pit bulls, but workers only had days to pull it together.
"It was a monumental effort keeping safety in mind and responsibility it really took an army to put together," said Debbie Hill, the vice president of operations.
While so many positive changes have already been witnessed, there are also the reminders of the brutality that used to be everyday life pit bulls. Most of the animals are heavily scarred and injured in many other ways, including one pit missing a leg. There is evidence such as heavy chains and collars, weights and even a breeding machine. Evidence from dog fighting is just part of the motivation to give man's best friend a new life.
"There is the justice and saving as many as possible and giving them a second chance but really it's their first chance," said Debbie Hill.
The Humane Society shelter once housed 500 pit bulls including nearly 100 puppies. Many of the dogs have already found homes and the goal is to place every pit-bull with a rescue group.
Humane Society officials stress that these rescued dogs are only suitable for individuals with experience dealing with this type of animal. For more information contact the Humane Society at 314- 802- 5712.
