KSDK -- A charity that helps millions of children around the world is expanding its presence in the St. Louis area. This morning, the Ronald McDonald House broke ground on a new home in west St. Louis County.
The home will be located on the campus of St. John's Medical Mercy Center in Creve Coeur. The new house is designed to service families who have children staying at hospitals in west St. Louis County. The other two homes are located in the City of St. Louis.
On a larger scale, the building of the new home marks a major milestone for the Ronald McDonald House Charities.
"When it opens, it will be the 300th Ronald McDonald House in the world to open. And we're an organization that's only been around for 35 years, so to already be opening the 300th house is phenomenal," Dan Harbaugh, president of the Ronald McDonald House serving St. Louis.
The new home will serve approximately 20 families a night. Since 1981, the Ronald McDonald House has helped more than 20,000 families.
The $4.5 million home is expected to open in September 2010.
