KSDK -- St. Louis County police have one man in custody and are looking for another in connection with the assault of two officers Friday.

Investigators say it happened during a traffic stop at Chambers and Empire Roads just after 2 p.m.

"I've never seen anything like this before. This is the most action we've had and I've been here since '87," said Eugene Dillon, Jr., who lives just two blocks away.  "If something's going on here real bad, I want to know about it so I can start doing something different."

When officers approached the car, they say the driver put the white Chevy Monte Carlo into reverse, ramming the patrol car and swiping one of the officers. Both policemen fired at the car before it took off.

"You never know who you're dealing with and based on history, you just have to make sure that you protect yourself as best you can," said Lt. Tom Larkin.

There are two apartment complexes near the scene. Police searched the apartment buildings but the suspect was not found.

The car was found late Friday night.

No charges have been filed yet.
