KSDK- "The only think I had time to think is, 'I'm gonna die'," says Dan Parris. Months after being badly hurt in a plane crash in Africa, a filmmaker tells his story and welcomes home the rest of his team. Saturday night, Parris headed to Lambert St. Louis International Airport to greet Tim and David Peterka. The brothers were part of his film team in Nairobi back in August. The crew decided to shoot video of a slum from the sky. When the team found out the plane would only fit two of the four team members, the brothers stayed behind. Dan Parris of Chesterfield and Rob Lehr of Ballwin boarded the plane with their cameras.
Parris describes when he knew there was trouble. "I saw two power lines right there and I just knew I was going to be in a plane crash... Then I just felt like I got tackled by seven different football players from every side. The next thing I knew I woke up upside down just paralyzed, saw people running towards me," he says. Parris was pulled from the crash moments before it exploded. The pilot and co-pilot died. Lehr suffered burns cuts, and potential post traumatic stress.
After the crash, Tim and David Peterka continued shooting their film which involved living on $1.25 a day. The brothers say it was amazing to come home to so much fanfare, "It was really emotional, its exciting just coming home after 5 months and all the places we've been," says Tim Peterka. Parris says it's great to see the project has gone on. "It's defiantly going to change but the mission continues on our goal is still defiantly to reach out to our generation and say 'Hey' we've got to do something about this injustice and this extreme poverty in the world especially in places like Africa."
