KSDK -- A Rolla man faces charges after he allegedly shook his live-in girlfriend's four-month-old child.
Phelps County Sheriff Department spokesperson D. Andrew Davis said the mother allegedly left the child with Sammy Joe Mayberry, 25, while she went shopping on November 16. When she returned, the baby was lethargic and unresponsive.
Police said the child was taken to a St. Louis hospital and was listed in stable condition.
Police said Mayberry was arrested Wednesday morning and was charged with second-degree assault.
According to the probable cause statement, Mayberry admitted holding the child "up in the air not supporting [his] head moving him side to side." Police said Mayberry told detective he didn't know his own strength and may have shaken the child too hard.
Mayberry was jailed on a $25,000 bond.
