  • Dozens of local families dealing with juvenile diabetes are enjoying fun and fellowship this weekend. It's the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Family Retreat Weekend at the downtown Millenium Hotel.

The retreat gives young diabetics and their families a chance to not only have fun, but educate themselves about diabetes and how to live with it. This is the 7th year for this annual event.

Diabetes is the name given to disorders in which the body has trouble regulating its blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels. There are two major types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes, also called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a disorder of the body's immune system -- that is, its system for protecting itself from viruses, bacteria or any "foreign" substances.
