KSDK -- The economy continues to take its toll on local food pantries.

Circle of Concern in Valley Park is running low on many of its most-needed items.

High-protien foods are going quickly as the pantry tries to provide well-balanced meals for its clients.

Requests for food are about 20% ahead of last year. Directors say they don't see the problem easing any time soon.

"We're seeing people who two years ago had a stable, middle-class lifestyle. And today they're struggling trying to get by on unemployment and food stamps," said Glenn Koenen, Circle of Concern director. "Unfortunatley we think the rest of this year is going to be just as bad as what we're seeing now. Every week there's more new families coming to us, asking for help."

The items most in need:

  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Cereal
  • Canned fruit (especially no sugar added)
  • Chili or beef stew
  • Bath soap
  • Paper towels
