St. Louis (KSDK) - There was a silent protest outside the Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis Tuesday night, lead by nuns.
The women are upset by what some of them here call abuse by the Catholic Church. Specifically, a recent stand the church has taken with an organization that represents about 80 percent of the nuns in America.
It wasn't only nuns at the protest, they were joined by other religious leaders and lay people.
In all, about three dozen people spent an hour in front of the Cathedral holding candles and showing their support for the organization called Leadership Congregation for Women Religious, the group that represents what most people would think of as nuns.
They are upset over a letter the Catholic Church sent to the national organization last month. In it, the Church expressed concern over some of the groups associations and stances on issues like birth control, gay marriage and abortion, and indicated that more oversight of the group, by the church, is needed.
"Just the whole thing that they want to do this when there are so many other relationships that need healing in our world. And then they're concentrating on this. I'm putting it in the hands of the Holy Spirit to come to a reconciliation on this issue," said Sister Connie Probst.
The group plans to be at the Cathedral Basilica every Tuesday night, praying and showing support for the organization of nuns as it considers its response to the Church.
