Jackson, Mo (KSDK) -- This Memorial Day weekend, bargain hunters will flock south of St. Louis for an event dubbed the 100 Mile Yard Sale. It's along Missouri 25, from Jackson to Kennett. Jackson is about an hour and 45 minutes south of St. Louis along I-55.
The Missouri Department of Transportation is warning drivers to take alternate routes and expect delays because there's a lot to do along the way.
No doubt a lot of people will hope to score good deals at yard sales, no matter where you live, this Memorial Day weekend. But if you're selling you're stuff, you'll want to make sure you're doing it the right way.
Financial Highway has advice to increase of your chances of yard sale success. First, prepare ahead of time and have an assortment of coins and small bill to make change. Keep that money in a fanny back so it's never sitting unattended.
Financial Highway says to cover tables you're using to display your stuff with colorful table cloths. Apparently, this works subconsciously to make shoppers think stuff is worth the price you're asking.
Next, use pre-printed price tags or painters tape to price everything.
Grab the attention of passers-by by putting eye-catching items near the road.
Display jewelry on a fabric or blanket. Just make sure you show off its best effect.
If you're selling electrical items, people will want to test them to make sure they work. So, it's a good idea to have an extension cord or batteries handy.
Next, offer a "free with purchase" box. It's a good way to get rid of odds and ends that couldn't be sold alone. You can bundle them up by theme.
Lastly, Financial Highway says to pick a day on the first of the month or the 15th of the month to have your yard sale. The reason is because people are usually paid on those days.
