St. Louis (KSDK) - You know the drill when you fly on a commercial airline. For takeoff and landing, turn off pagers, cell phones, electronic games, and laptops.

But is there proof these gadgets threaten airplanes?

NewsChannel Five's Art Holliday spoke to a college professor who grew up in St. Louis, who wonders if it's time to change the rule.

They say rules are made to be broken, and it appears many airline passengers do it on a daily basis when it comes to using personal electronics during takeoff and landing.

That got the attention of University of Illinois Professor Daniel Simons.
