Chesterfield, MO (KSDK) - The mayor of Chesterfield is happy to see more new stores open in his city, but he is concerned about the race to build two separate outlet malls.
Developers of Taubman Prestige Outlets are already working on their mall, and plan to have it open next August.
The competition, St. Louis Premium Outlets, plans to open next September, just five miles away.
This week, both companies submitted the final paperwork to Chesterfield for their projects.
Mayor Bruce Geiger says studies have shown the area may only be able to support one outlet mall, and he'd rather have only one, saying two may put too much pressure on the existing Chesterfield Mall.
"My fear is that one of the issues we've had is that the mall has been concerned about the premium outlet malls, but with one outlet mall I think it was a credit to the mall, bringing a lot of people in, they'd be going to the mall as well. Two, I don't know that you wouldn't start seeing more competition with the retailers the mall has," said Geiger.
He says Chesterfield will be watching very carefully to see what negative impacts two outlet malls could have.
The companies working on the outlets, Taubman and Simon properties have both said they're confident their malls will do well.
