East St. Louis (KSDK) -- A woman and her elderly mother died in an early morning fire.
It happened in the 1300 block of North 37th Street in East St. Louis.
Family members say 51-year-old Rosie May moved in with her 70-year-old mother Bertha to help take care of her.
The say the older woman was confined to a wheelchair and the other walked with a cane.
Neighbors used pots and pans to break windows, trying to rescue the women. But they say the smoke was too thick and the fire too hot.
The fire started just after midnight, early Thursday morning. The cause is under investigations.
Two dogs also died in the fire.
