Officer shot in Fairview Heights traffic stop, suspect also shot and in custody

Fairview Heights, IL (KSDK) - A police pursuit that started in Fairview Heights early Tuesday, ended in the Centreville area after the fleeing driver crashed into a portion of a garage at Pershing and Lake.

Illinois State Police investigators say the Fairview Heights officer who initiated a traffic stop was injured after being shot in the hand by the suspect who then fled the scene, but not before he was shot multiple times by assisting officers.

Authorities took the driver into custody in Centreville just after 2:30 a.m. and transported the suspect to a hospital.  A woman passenger in the suspect vehicle was also apprehended at the scene.

Police investigators say the motorist was pulled over after police observed a violation.  After speaking with the driver, the officer returned to his vehicle to cite the driver.  Upon returning to the suspects car, the man producers a gun and opned fire on the officer.

Additional officers began returning fire, strking the fleeing motorist several times.  however the driver was able to elude police until crashing in Centreville.

In the meantime, eastbound Highway 50 between Illinois Route 161 and Bunkam Road is closed while the police investigation continues in that area.
