Charleston, SC (Sports Network) - Raijon Kelly scored 15 points to lead the
Samford Bulldogs to a 62-57 win over the College of Charleston Cougars in a
Southern Conference tilt at TD Arena.
Kelly also handed out a game-high four assists as Samford (4-12, 2-1 SoCon)
defeated Charleston for the first time in program history. Will Cook went for
12 points and seven boards, while Clide Geffrard Jr. was a perfect 4-of-4 from
the field for 10 points.
Charleston (10-5, 2-1) was led by Adjehi Baru who scored 18 points on 5-of-9
shooting, while grabbing a game-high 11 boards and blocking three shots.
Andrew Lawrence added 14 points as the Cougars snapped a five-game winning
streak with the loss.
Despite not scoring a point in the final 2:52 of the first half, Samford led
29-24 at halftime. The Bulldogs' defense was the story in the first half as it
held Charleston to 8-of-25 from the field with just two 3-pointers.
The Cougars shot 56.5 percent from the floor in the second half and led 55-51
late in the contest. But Geffrard Jr. and Connor Miller hit consecutive
3-pointers as part of an 8-0 run to give Samford the lead. Lawrence missed
a late triple as Samford survived.
Charleston registered just five total assists and lost despite outrebounding
Samford, 33-28.
