String of downtown STL robberies investigated

ST. LOUIS - Three masked robbers are on the run and police are trying to find their trail.

Police Chief Sam Dotson said the three suspects are between 18 and 25-years-old and they robbed nine people in three separate robberies in less than 15 minutes.

The suspects took cell phones, cash, and credit cards. Dotson said stolen cell phones are often sold on the black market. The suspects fled the area in a stolen red Chevy Blazer, which was found in Washington Park, Illinois. Dotson says the suspects may live there or have a connection to the town.

"We've seen patterns like this before and we believe this group could be responsible for a couple of dozen robberies between our robberies and the Illinois side of the river," said Dotson.

The chief said criminals are finding more opportunity to rob people because there are more people downtown and a revitalization. He said thieves stole 55 guns from cars in downtown so far this year. He insists the incident does not make downtown more dangerous.

Dotson is adding undercover officers to the contingent if bike and uniformed officers already on patrol there.
