Two area children injured from boiling water experiment

ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – During the below freezing temperatures earlier this week, some headed outside to see what could be frozen instantly. Those tricks proved dangerous to some though.

Two children were treated with burns Tuesday for throwing boiling water into the cold air, St. Louis Children's Hospital spokeswoman Jackie Ferman said. Several posted YouTube videos and shared on social media sites their trick of throwing boiling water into the air and it instantly turning into ice crystals in the air.

According to an article by the Argus Leader, Los Angeles Times and BuzzFeed reporters found more than 50 instances of burn victims from throwing boiling water into the cold using Twitter.

NewsChannel 5 meteorologist Scott Connell said temperatures are now too warm to attempt this trick and don't look to get that low again anytime soon.

The injured children were treated and discharged from the hospital.
