WWII veteran, Cardinals fan Col. Ed Harper dies

LAKE SAINT LOUIS, Mo. (KSDK) – A World War II veteran and two-time Purple Heart recipient, who was a large St. Louis Cardinals fan, has died.

Col. Edwin "Ed" Harper passed away Feb. 14 at the age of 93. According to his obituary, he was the last surviving member of the Black Sheep Squadron.

This past October, Harper sat down with Art Holliday to talk about the squadron's love of the St. Louis Cardinals, and how the team sent baseball caps, baseballs and bats to members for each plane they downed during the war.

After his 28 years in the Marines, Harper worked for 17 years at McDonnell Douglas.

He is survived by his wife, Jane Harper, daughter and two stepdaughters as well as a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services are set for Harper at Baue Funeral and Memorial Center in St. Charles for Friday at 5 p.m. A visitation will be held prior to that at 2 p.m.
