Missing St. Charles lawyer arrested in NYC

ST. LOUIS (KSDK) – The lawyer whose disappearance left nearly 60 cases in the lurch and who is accused of forging documents was arrested Friday night when he landed at Kennedy International Airport in New York City from an inbound flight from Istanbul, Turkey.

Jeff Witt, 39, is charged with falsifying documents to obtain a line of credit on a St. Louis County home that he did not own, as well as aggravated identity theft.

In September, Witt was accused of submitting a false loan application in order to obtain a $100,000 of credit secured by the victim's St. Louis-area home. The victim did not know about Witt's loan application.

Witt allegedly gave an associated false documentation and identification in the victim's name so the associate could impersonate the victim on the loan closing – enabling them to obtain a $60,000 credit line, which Witt used for personal purposes.

When the victim discovered what Witt had done, Witt allegedly wrote a false letter on fake bank letterhead to persuade him that he had cancelled the loan.

Witt was indicted by a federal grand jury on Dec. 11. Witt disappeared in late October, abandoning his office and around 60 clients.

The attorney assigned to take over for Witt says the

vanished lawyer may have been stealing his former clients' settlement checks.
