Mother of two killed while crossing street in Richmond Heights

A mother of two hit and killed while crossing the street with her groceries.

RICHMOND HEIGHTS, MO. - A 43-year-old mother of two was hit and killed while crossing the street just before 9 p.m. in Richmond Heights Friday.

Police say Gretchen Stahlschmidt was crossing Clayton Road from Highland Terrace when she was struck. Witnesses tell NewsChannel 5 the crash was loud enough that people nearby rushed to help.

Kathleen King heard the accident from her apartment and ran outside.

“I walked down the sidewalk to where the accident was to see if she was being helped and there were already people doing CPR and I saw her groceries in the street so she was probably walking home from Schnucks,” King recalled.

Police say the driver is not facing charges at this time. They’re still looking into whether Stahlschmidt had the right of way, if the driver was distracted, or simply didn’t see her in the dark.

Services for Stahlschmidt are being held Wednesday in Kirkwood.
