Normandy community discusses failing district

KSDK - The Normandy School District needs millions of dollars to complete the school year.

Saturday, it held a meeting to share a plan for the district's future.

Dr. Ty Mcnichols addressed a packed room filled with students, parents, teachers, and elected officials ---revealing a plan to keep his district alive and asking for the community's feedback. The plan focuses on an innovative approach to teach and develop students.

The district is struggling to survive because the unaccredited district is spending millions of dollars this year to send students to other schools. It needs $5 just to get through this year. Dr. McNichols says right now the district's fate is in the hands of legislators-- he even hired lobbyists to try and convince state lawmakers to approve the supplemental budget and that's costing the struggling district $90,000.

"We are fighting and we are doing everything we can to survive all the different things that we are having to deal with at the same time," Mcnichols said.
