One of two escaped wolves shot

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mo. (KSDK) – One of the two timber wolves that escaped from an enclosure at a residence near Robertsville has been shot, according to a Facebook post from the Franklin County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies responded to a home on Wardfield Road at about 7:20 p.m. on Monday. A resident told police he had shot a large animal that he saw in an enclosed area with his sheep.

The wolf's owner identified it as his.

The second wolf is still missing. Police received a tip that it had been spotted on Interstate 44 west of St. Clair but this hasn't been confirmed.

The wolves escaped from a caged area in the 800 block of Moon Light Trail on Monday. They are described as 100 to 150 pounds and normally not aggressive, according to the owner.

The owner described them as skittish, but that he wasn't sure how they'd act when hungry.

Authorities say not to approach the remaining wolf, and to instead contact the Franklin County Sheriff's Office at 636-583-2560 or Conservation Agent Ben Pursley at 636-744-2974.
