Opening arguments underway in Clayton hotel attack

CLAYTON, Mo. (KSDK) – Jury selection is over and opening arguments are underway in the case of a man accused of child molestation and sodomy after mistakenly getting into bed with a 9-year-old girl.

Police say Daniel Hughes of Pennsylvania drunkenly requested – and received – a room key for the wrong room at the Ritz-Carlton Clayton. Once inside, Hughes is accused of molesting a 9-year-old girl he mistakenly thought was a female acquaintance, according to police.

Hughes was in town on business for Enterprise Rent-A-Car.

The Ritz-Carlton released the following statement after the incident:

"Of course, most importantly we deeply regret that this incident took place, and we have reached out directly to the guests involved to express our concern for them. We are taking steps to underscore the importance of our security procedures at our hotels in light of this incident and are cooperating fully with the authorities on this matter. As litigation is pending, we do not have plans to comment further at this time."
