OSHA: Construction company endangered workers

FENTON, Mo. (KSDK) – Gershenson Construction Co. Inc. has been cited for 11 safety violations by the U.S. Department of Labor after a worker suffered a broken vertebra when he was struck by a partially suspended load of sewer pipe and knocked to the bottom of a 13-foot-deep trench.

The proposed penalties against the company total $110,400, according to a news release from the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.

Two other workers were actively working in the trench when the accident happened to install a new sewer system at the Riverside and Yarnell Sanitary Relief Sewer construction project in Fenton.

Of the 11 violations, one was considered willful and 10 were serious.

The Occupational Safety and Health Commission alleges that the workers risked being struck by a partially suspended load, didn't have proper training or head protection, were using damaged equipment and operated within 10 feet of energized power lines.

The company has 15 business days to contest the citations and penalties.
