Pit bull attack lands woman in jail

MARION, Ill. (AP) - A southern Illinois judge has ordered a woman to spend 30 weekends in jail for recklessly letting her pit bull mix dogs run free when they attacked a boy in 2010.

WSIL-TV reports that 49-year-old Tanya Holland of Bush was sentenced Friday in Williamson County Circuit Court. That's where she already had pleaded guilty to one count of reckless conduct.

Authorities say the dogs attacked then-5-year-old Winston Bankston as he played with his older brother. Winston sustained severe injuries to his body and face.

Hurst Police Chief Ron Harvel shot one dog to death while Bankston was being rescued. WSIL says the other dog also was destroyed.
