East St. Louis, Ill (KSDK) -- A debate on a proposed East St. Louis business curfew will happen Tuesday night.
Supporters of a curfew believe it's a way to ease criminal activity, while opponents believe it could sink the economy.
The proposal would force businesses in the city to close at 1 a.m. on weekdays and 2 a.m. on weekends. Casinos, hotels, motels, healthcare providers and gas stations would be exempt from the curfew.
Mayor Alvin Parks has ordered short-term curfews in the past, but opposes permanent changes, saying they would hurt the Metro East economy.
A public hearing is scheduled on the issue in the City Council Chambers at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
