"Ryan Ferguson and his family have been inordinately impacted by injustice for the last 10 years," Mike Rognlien posted on the fundraising website. "This fundraising effort is intended to help Ryan get started in his new life."

Ferguson has been in prison for more than a decade for the 2001 murder of Columbia Tribune sports editor Kent Heitholt in the newspaper's parking lot.

Prosecutors have 15 days from that decision to figure out if they will retry Ferguson.

So far, the website has almost raised $3,800 and hope to reach its goal in the next 85 days.
